Building on a Solid Foundation

Press play to take a 3D tour of the future School of Law campus

The School of Law is raising funds to build a new facility that will meet the changing needs of today’s law school community. Updated technology in the classroom is essential for advanced teaching. Our law library can no longer just be a repository for books and periodicals, it must be an online center that meets the 24-hour-a-day demands for access by students, faculty, government officials and practicing attorneys. The School of Law’s devotion to excellence requires a modern facility that is responsive to student and faculty needs and provides an environment that facilitates teaching, studying and learning.Law School Students in the Classroom

"I am committed to making our law school one of the finest in the country. Many law alumni have already contributed to our new building fund, and we sincerely appreciate the incredible generosity. With that support, and the significant commitment of $30 million from the University, we now have two thirds of the funds necessary to build the new law school."

--President Harris Pastides

Location

The new building will take up most of the block between Senate, Gervais, Bull and Pickens streets, where USC's campus police headquarters are now located. The new location in the geographic epicenter of the Columbia's legal community will be a boon to students: the site is close to the state Supreme Court building, the National Advocacy Center, the state Capitol and area law firms.

Design

The design of the new School of Law building will make it easy for students and faculty to get to know each other outside of the classroom, with a courtyard that will allow students to study outside.

  • The new educational spaces will provide the quality and flexibility needed to adapt as methods of legal education change due to emerging technology.
  • The campus will facilitate interaction between students and faculty and will incorporate informal learning spaces that reflect the study habits of modern students.
  • Students and faculty will have access to the most modern technology in the library, the classrooms and the teaching courtrooms, well beyond the capabilities of the current Law Center.
  • The facility also will house our new Rule of Law Center, which we envision as playing a critically important role in promoting constitutional law, democracy and freedom around the world.
