Our Promise to Students

The Division of Student Affairs and Academic Support serves at the core of the student experience. The division is devoted to promoting their intellectual, social, physical, and emotional growth. Five areas are emphasized: student leadership and service; healthy lifestyles; student transition and support; cultural awareness; and educational opportunity. Each builds a solid foundation for student success at the University of South Carolina.

About Student Affairs and Academic Support

The Division of Student Affairs and Academic Support comprises more than 40 departments, including those devoted to undergraduate admissions and student retention, student development, University housing, and student life.

HALLMARKS & RANKINGS
  • U.S. News & World Report has ranked the University 101 first-year student experience as a "Program to Look for" nine consecutive years.
  • Campus Recreation's Group Exercise program is ranked among the top programs in its class for the third consecutive year.
  • The Daily Gamecock, the student's independent newspaper, hones students' leadership skills while breaking stories on a national scale.

The student affairs and academic support units work closely together to provide more than 5,000 student leadership and engagement opportunities. Students learn leadership and life skills in a variety of settings. The most notable involve intramural sports and club activities, residence halls, fraternities and sororities, student organizations, and student government. Many community service avenues are offered to our students in order to help all South Carolina citizens. Their passion to do so embodies the Carolina spirit.

Priorities

Carolina's continuing ability to attract the highest-caliber students, including those with high academic standing and equally promising students with the highest need for financial support, depends on philanthropy. Our campaign goals are centered on:

  • Student support for University-wide, endowed scholarships administered by Financial Aid and Undergraduate Admissions. Included is continuing support for the Gamecock Guarantee, which ensures the promise of a Carolina education for first-generation college graduates from disadvantaged households.
  • New student leadership initiatives focused on civil discourse, integrity, and community responsibility.
  • First-Year Student Success initiatives including University 101, the Student Success Center, Residential Life, and Student Life programs.
  • Building on the success of peer-mentoring programs at the Career Center, University 101, Residence Life, and Multicultural Affairs.
  • An increase in endowed Study Abroad scholarships.
