The College of Social Work is dedicated to leadership, social justice and service in South Carolina, the nation and the international community. We emphasize the preparation of social work professionals and the creation of social work knowledge, with the purpose of addressing the major challenges facing our society. Through inspired education, relevant research and engaged outreach, the College of Social Work’s core focus can be distilled down to this: to help individuals, families and communities be healthy and productive with the ultimate goal of advancing social well-being and social justice for vulnerable people around the world.

About the College of Social Work

From its inception, the College of Social Work has operated as a program of highest quality. This is evidenced by the award of unconditional accreditation by the Commission of Accreditation of the Council on Social Work Education in 1969 and in every subsequent review. As the College continues to grow and develop in order to meet new needs and emerging challenges, it will maintain this historic commitment to quality in every endeavor.

Hallmarks and Rankings
  • U.S. News & World Report ranks the College of Social Work among the top 20 percent of graduate schools in public universities throughout the nation
  • MSW satellite programs in Greenville and Charleston
  • Graduate certificate programs in gerontology, drug & addiction studies and military members, veterans and their families that are designed to meet the need for trained social workers in high demand fields of practice.
  • An internationally unique MSW program in Korea - this was the first MSW program offered in its entirety in another country.
  • College of Social Work students contribute over $2.5 million annually to serve the state of South Carolina through internships.

Programs of study:

  • Undergraduate
    • We offer both a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree and a minor in Social Work. These programs effectively prepare graduates for generalist social work practice in a wide variety of settings.
  • Graduate
    • We prepare graduates to work effectively, ethically, and collaboratively in diverse settings, With a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree, graduates are ready to help address the major challenges in our society—from impoverished communities to mental illness. We also offer dual degree programs with public health, public administration, and law, providing graduates with even broader academic experiences and professional opportunities.
  • Doctoral
    • The Doctor of Social Work (PhD) program, with its unique focus on transdisciplinary, community-engaged research, prepares graduates to be effective scholars and educators.
  • Graduate Certificate Programs
    • Programs are available specializing in the following high-demand fields of practice: drug and addiction studies, gerontology, military service members and their families, and women and gender studies.

  • Support Faculty Teaching and Research – Our faculty are conducting innovative and important research on major issues in society. They’re also constantly exploring ways to best prepare tomorrow’s social work professionals.
  • Accelerate Positive Change – Our programs, centers and institutes make a difference. The College is driving critical action on research and programs that improve the lives of the most vulnerable.
